Find a language partner at your college or university
Colleges and universities attract people with very different mother tongues, everyday languages and specialist languages. Students, PhD candidates and staff from numerous countries often know very different languages, which offers great potential for language exchange. After all, if you only search for language partners using a general, location-based search, itâs easy to overlook people who have a similar weekly routine, travel the same routes or find themselves in comparable language situations.
Using the âuniversitiesâ field in your Sprachtandem.ch profile, you can specify your college or university and then filter specifically for profiles from the same institution. This creates a concrete common starting point for your first conversation.
How to add a college or university to your profile
In your profile settings, youâll find a field where you can add your college or university. There, you can choose from all accredited Swiss higher education institutions. The selected institution will appear on your public profile.
This information does not indicate which campus a person is at, which degree programme they are studying, or what role they hold. Nor is it verified by the educational institution. You should therefore also describe the language you offer, your target language, your proficiency level, your availability and whether you prefer to practise online or in person. This will give you the best chance of finding a suitable tandem partner.
The option to add an educational institution is available to all users â a Premium subscription is not required.

How to search for a language partner within your college or university
Once youâve added a college or university to your profile, it will appear there and youâll be able to search for language partners within your educational institution.
This option is in addition to the standard language partner search; this means you can further refine your search, for example by specifying a target language.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my affiliation be verified by the university?
No. You can select your university as an institution in your Sprachtandem.ch profile, but this information does not constitute an endorsement by the university. Sprachtandem.ch is neither the official website of the university in question nor does this landing page imply any partnership with it. Use the university details as a search and guidance tool, and check for yourself whether the learning objectives, communication style and availability suit you.
Is this offer intended solely for students?
No. A language tandem can also be useful for PhD students, researchers, staff and new members of the university community, provided they have a suitable profile on Sprachtandem.ch. The university affiliation is intended to make it easier to find people with the same institutional background. It is not an ID card, an access pass or an ETH verification. Therefore, please describe in general terms the context in which you work and what you would like to practise.
