Find a language exchange partner at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)

HSLU is not a one-campus university. According to its location overview checked in July 2026, teaching and work are spread across the cantons of Lucerne and Zug, including Horw, the city of Lucerne, Lucerne-Emmenbrücke, Lucerne-Kriens and Campus Zug-Rotkreuz. Its community is substantial too: 8’696 bachelor’s and master’s students were enrolled in 2025, and 10% were assigned to the HSLU statistics category “Ausland” (abroad), which covers people staying in Switzerland solely for study purposes.

That mix creates plenty of possible language connections, but timetables and travel between sites mean the right partner can be easy to miss. On Sprachtandem.ch, you can add HSLU to your profile and filter the search for people who have listed the same university.

The university entry is self-reported and is not confirmed by HSLU. Sprachtandem.ch is independent of the university. The filter still gives you a practical shared starting point: similar commuting routes, semester rhythms and everyday situations in which German, English or Swiss German become useful.

Why arrange a language exchange within HSLU?

A partner from the same university brings common ground, even when you study or work at different sites. You can begin with project work, presentations, settling into Lucerne or travelling between HSLU locations. Across the locations listed by HSLU in July 2026—Horw, central Lucerne, Emmenbrücke, Kriens and Rotkreuz—that shared context also makes scheduling more realistic.

  • You can connect with people from the same university community without limiting yourself to one HSLU location.
  • You can plan meetings around routes you already use, such as a busy public place near Lucerne railway station or Campus Zug-Rotkreuz.
  • German and English learners can practise vocabulary for projects, presentations and conversations with fellow students or colleagues.
  • New arrivals in Central Switzerland can work on Standard German while gradually improving their understanding of Swiss German.

A tandem is a reciprocal exchange rather than one-way tutoring. What is a language tandem? explains the principle. Agree early on how much time you want to spend in each language and what kind of feedback is helpful.

New: add your university to your profile

Select HSLU as your university in your profile. You can then filter the search for people who have also entered HSLU. This is particularly useful because HSLU’s July 2026 location overview spans Lucerne and Zug rather than a single campus: the filter brings profiles from that distributed community into one search selection.

The entry does not show a person’s location, degree programme or role, and HSLU does not verify it. Add your offered language, target language, level, availability and preference for online or in-person practice. The guide below covers the profile and search basics, while Finding the Ideal Language Exchange Partner helps you assess whether expectations and learning styles are compatible.

How to search within your university

  1. Create an account or complete your profile, select HSLU and state a concrete aim, such as more confident university conversations, clearer pronunciation or subject-specific vocabulary.
  2. Choose the language you offer and the one you want to practise. German and English are natural combinations at HSLU; Swiss German can be an additional everyday listening goal.
  3. Open the tandem search and filter by HSLU. The filter narrows the institution, but it does not automatically narrow the location, field of study or availability.
  4. Compare profiles by learning goal, level, interests and time slots. Choose someone whose expectations fit yours rather than deciding on language alone.
  5. Make contact and agree on a first session. You can begin online or meet in a well-used public place, for example near the railway station in Lucerne or Rotkreuz. Before meeting, read Keep Sprachtandem.ch safe.

Clear time blocks, a prepared topic and a brief review keep the conversation focused without making it an exam. The guide Make the Most of Your Practice Session offers a simple structure.

From HSLU language courses to self-organised tandem practice

For the Fall Semester 2026, the HSLU Language Centre lists courses in eight foreign languages as well as German as a foreign language. As checked in July 2026, HSLU also lists bachelor’s and master’s programmes taught completely in English and presents English as an important language of study. As of July 2026, the Language Centre also runs its own Tandem offer for students, lecturers and employees.

Sprachtandem.ch is not part of those HSLU services and does not replace registration for them. It is an independent way to search by profile, learning goal and availability across HSLU locations. Keep the two offers separate: on Sprachtandem.ch, the HSLU entry is based on what each user states in their profile.

For a specific goal, explore Learning German, Learning English or Learning Swiss German. Then choose a situation you can genuinely rehearse, such as small talk before group work, a project presentation or following an informal conversation during a break.

Who is an HSLU language tandem for?

An HSLU-focused tandem suits people who study, research, teach or work there and want to turn their shared environment into regular language practice.

  • International and exchange students can practise German for organisation, housing and local contacts beyond English-taught classes.
  • German-speaking students can strengthen their English for presentations, international projects or the transition into professional life.
  • HSLU members moving between Horw, Lucerne, EmmenbrĂĽcke, Kriens or Rotkreuz can look for someone whose schedule fits their commuting pattern.
  • Doctoral researchers, lecturers and employees can shape sessions around specialist conversations and working hours.
  • People newly arrived in the region can build Standard German and initially focus on understanding Swiss German in everyday exchanges.

Start your HSLU language exchange

With 8’696 bachelor’s and master’s students in 2025 and locations across Lucerne and Zug in the overview checked in July 2026, the shared HSLU connection is a useful first filter. Add HSLU only when the profile information is accurate, describe your goal clearly and check whether level, timing and meeting preferences fit before arranging a session.

This turns a large, geographically distributed community into a more manageable set of possible partners for German, English or Swiss German practice that can work around your actual university routine.

Frequently asked questions about language exchange at HSLU

How does the HSLU filter work on Sprachtandem.ch?

Add HSLU to your profile, then use the search to filter for profiles that list the same institution. The university entry is self-reported. It does not confirm a person’s identity, enrolment or employment, and HSLU does not verify it. Review the person’s languages, level, learning goal, availability and profile details before making contact.

Can I find someone from the same HSLU location?

The filter described here applies to the main institution HSLU, not automatically to a particular site. The location overview checked in July 2026 includes Horw, Lucerne, Lucerne-EmmenbrĂĽcke, Lucerne-Kriens and Campus Zug-Rotkreuz. Check the profile or ask where the person is usually based before choosing a convenient public meeting place.

Which languages are especially useful for a tandem at HSLU?

German and English are obvious choices. As checked in July 2026, HSLU lists bachelor’s and master’s programmes taught completely in English, while German is useful for many contacts outside English-taught classes. Swiss German can also be valuable for daily life in Lucerne and Zug, particularly as an initial listening-comprehension goal rather than a replacement for Standard German.

Who should use the HSLU university entry?

It is useful for people who can truthfully list HSLU as their university, including students, exchange students, doctoral researchers, lecturers, researchers and employees. The feature is not limited to one subject area or location. Enter the institution accurately and describe your role clearly enough that other users are not given a misleading impression.

Is Sprachtandem.ch HSLU’s official Tandem service?

No. As checked in July 2026, the HSLU Language Centre runs its own Tandem offer for students, lecturers and employees. Sprachtandem.ch is an independent platform and is not HSLU’s official website. Here, the self-entered university field helps users search for profiles from the same institution; HSLU’s registration process and rules remain separate.
