Day of Languages 2026

The annual European Day of Languages takes place on 26 September. This day of action goes back to an initiative of the Council of Europe. It is intended to celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures around the world and to raise awareness of the importance of language learning. At the same time, the "Day of Languages" highlights the need to acquire skills in two or more languages in order to be fully active as citizens in democratic Europe.

"For quadrilingual Switzerland, and especially for Graubünden as the only trilingual canton, this day of action is also an opportunity to draw attention to Switzerland's linguistic diversity and to the importance of preserving and promoting the national minority languages.

In parallel with the ""Day of Languages"", the ""Day of Multilingualism"" was launched by Helvetia Latina in 2019. The idea is simple: on this day, the ""weighting of languages"" is reversed: German becomes the ""minority"", while the Latin national languages become the ""majority"". Members of parliament are encouraged to express themselves in a national language other than their own and to give special priority to the minority languages Italian and Romansh. In doing so, the Federal Administration and the Federal Parliament take another step towards multilingualism in practice."
