Start your Portuguese language exchange in Lausanne!

Two people engaging in conversation.

What is a language exchange?

In a language exchange or language tandem, you meet up with a person whose native language you would like to learn. You can talk to each other for a while in one language and then in the other.

In order to learn a language, it is important to actually speak it. Language tandems are therefore the perfect complement to language schools and courses. Whether your goal is to become fluent in French, improve your pronunciation of Mandarin or immerse yourself in the intricacies of Spanish grammar, Sprachtandem.ch enables you to have a meaningful and personalised language exchange.

And how does a language tandem work?

The easiest way to explain language tandem is with an example: Lisa from Zurich will soon be travelling to France for a semester abroad. She has already attended a course at a language school to learn French, but lacks the opportunity to practise free conversation. Louise from Paris has recently accepted a job in Zurich. She wants to improve her German as quickly as possible so that she can participate better in life in Switzerland. The two find each other via Sprachtandem.ch. They first write a few messages to make sure that they both have the same idea about the meeting. Then they meet in a public place. First they speak German for half an hour, then they switch to French for the same amount of time.

The two not only learn the language of their respective language partners, but also learn something about their culture and gain insider knowledge from another country. The learning/practice method is a lot of fun and lets you get to know your counterpart in an uncomplicated and relaxed way. The special advantage of Sprachtandem is that the lessons are free because of the exchange principle.

Is Sprachtandem.ch free of charge?

On Sprachtandem.ch you can start your tandem search for free or let potential partners find you. With a premium account, you can increase your monthly limit and your profile will appear slightly higher in the search results.

Hi. My native languages are French and Portuguese (Brazilian version from Rio de Janeiro). I would like to learn Japanese. I am a complete beginner. I just studied a bit the hiragana and katakana alphabets. I would spend more time teaching than learning since I cannot keep a conversation in Japanese. I have a bit of teaching experience.

Hi, I'm Felipe, 30 years old. My native language is Portuguese and I consider myself fluent in English and French, but I always want to improve them. I can make myself understood in Spanish too. Now, I'm also learning Italian and German, and I wish a tandem at least to change some messages in Whatsapp. In German I'm still a little bit shy to speak. In Italian I'm already able to have some conversation. I'm trying to apply the "natural approach" to learn these languages, that is, I spend most of my studying time listening podcasts or reading texts about interesting topics, and very little time with grammar books. However I do search some contents when I notice some repeating grammar structure. Apart of learning languages, I love learning in general, about almost everything. Not surprisingly I'm research fellow (posdoc). Apart of that, I also love mountains, cooking, history, art, science and sightseeing (in the sense of the famous French verb "flĂąner" in which I don't know better translation in any other language).
